Happy New Year Everyone! I find saying goodbye to the old and hello to the new bittersweet. I always take a look back on the year ending summarizing the highlights followed by making a list of plans for the New Year. Some year’s things go as planned but others; not so much!
I am closing in on five years writing my column and have decided to shake it up a bit. My original intent for the column was to share my thoughts/feelings/experiences “coming home” in retirement after having living elsewhere as an adult. Specifically, I wanted to share my gratitude and appreciation for the wonders of the area and the lifestyle/values of the people living here. My hope was that the column would reinforce “what a wonderful life” it was and is growing up and living in NE South Dakota.
I thought it would be fun and interesting to engage other members/groups from the community in sharing their joy and appreciation for living in NE South Dakota, especially in retirement. So here are the questions I have come up with so far and will commence the bi-monthly series answering the questions myself before talking to others.
Retirement Series Questions
How long have you lived in the area and been retired?
I grew up in Milbank and left the area after high school. After retirement six years ago, I have been spending the summer/fall season living at the lake and would stay year round if my husband were willing.
Do you schedule your days or let them unfold naturally?
As you know, I am still learning to “just be more” and “do less.” I only schedule a couple activities a day to stay sane and am coming to really like the days that unfold naturally.
What is your greatest joy in retirement?
Freedom and not worrying about what other people think. As an organizational leader during my working years I was constantly judged for just doing my job.
What are some small luxuries you indulge in/appreciate now that your time is your own?
I enjoy long leisurely showers, reading all night, spending time enjoying my home in the light of day and unlimited viewing of the natural world both outside and in from my easy chair.
Do you have a hobby/interest/passion you engage in and how does it feed your soul?
The chance to be creative and enjoy the colorful and tactile pieces I create through stained glass, mosaics, weaving, quilting, gardening, canning, reading and writing. They all bring an extraordinary feeling of accomplishment quite different from work life outcomes.
Do you have any personal improvement goals you are actively engaged in?
I am always trying to improve my diet and exercise habits to maintain strength and function at this life stage along with trying to maintain balance to maximize the quality of my life and longevity.
Any surprises you weren’t expecting in retirement life?
Making so many new friends and how sweet life is without work responsibilities!
Advice/suggestions for the younger generation/those still in the work force?
Life is short; work hard, save money and retire as early as possible.
Hopes and wishes for our community or the world at large?
Prosperity and civil discord!
